چکیده

INTRODUCTION American trypanosomiasis, or Chagas' disease, is one of the most frequent causes of congestive heart failure and sudden death in the world (1-4). Its pathogenesis is still a matter of debate, even though the disease was described by the Brazilian Carlos Chagas in 1909 (5,6). In 1913 this brilliant scientist already saw "a new frontier of nervous system pathology" (7), yet today the neuropathogenic nature of the disease continues to be debated, as well as the question of how it should be treated. This paper will hereafter refer to the "neurogenic theory" of Chagas' disease, as opposed to the competing "myogenic theory", which is espoused by many researchers.

Pathogenesis of cardiac neuro-myopathy in Chagas' disease and the role of the autonomic nervous system.

Millions of people in Latin America are affected by Chagas' disease. Because of its lengthy evolution its symptoms begin to be noticed in the third decade when the person is in the fullness of life. From Mexico to Argentina, Chagas' disease is an endemic cardioneuromyopathy and the population exposed to the disease is about 65 million people [1]. The disease is transmitted: (a) by trypanosome i...

Cardiac Autonomic Control Mechanisms in the Pathogenesis of Chagas' Heart Disease

Primary abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system had been postulated as the pathogenic mechanisms of myocardial damage, in patients with Chagas disease. However, recent investigations indicate that these abnormalities are secondary and amenable to treatment with beta-adrenergic blockers. Moreover, muscarinic cardiac autoantibodies appear to enhance parasympathetic activity on the sinus nod...

Pathogenesis of chronic Chagas heart disease.

BACKGROUND Chagas disease remains a significant public health issue and a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Latin America. Despite nearly 1 century of research, the pathogenesis of chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy is incompletely understood, the most intriguing challenge of which is the complex host-parasite interaction. METHODS AND RESULTS A systematic review of the literature found in ...

Assessment of autonomic nervous system function in patients with non-alcoholic cirrhosis

Automatic dysfunction may contribute to the hemodynamic disturbances in cirrhosis. Tests of autonomic function were performed in 31 patients with non-alcoholic cirrhosis and 30 healthy subjects. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to child- Pugh,s classification ( A.B.C). The patients with moderate and severe cirrhosis( child B,C) had significant parasympathetic disturbance ( in the v...

Macrostructure of the Cranial Cervical Ganglion in the River Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis)

The autonomic nervous system consists of a vast range of nerves and ganglions. Anatomical studies have demonstrated that the sympathetic innervations of the head and neck are affected by the neurons that ramify from the cranial cervical ganglion (CCG). The CCG is the end of the sympathetic cervical trunk, which runs with the vagal nerve during its cervical course. In this study sixteen adult (2...
